The Tata power has drawn up an ambitious plan to invest Rs. 21,600 crore to add about 5,500 mw to its current generating capacity of 2,768 mw power. The company has also decided to not take any new ultra mega power project (UMPP) of 4,000mw unless the global financial condition revives as the current high borrowing cost will make large power projects financially unviable.
Giving details of the immediate investment plans of the company, the executive director, S Ramakrishnan said that as per the existing projects under consideration and implementation the company will have a generating capacity of 12,000 mw by 2014. Going ahead, the company will focus on the power plants with low carbon emission and by 2017 it would contribute 25 per cent to 30 per cent of the groups total generating capacity. Currently, the company generates 450 mw hydro electricity and 200 mw electricity from wind energy.
The projected 12,000 mw capacity by 2014 includes projects at various stages of implementation like 4,000mw ultra mega power project at Mundra, 1000 mw Maithon power plant and 120 mw Jojobera power plant in Jharkhand, 1000 mw in Naraj Matharpur and 500 mw near the proposed Kalinga Steel Plant in Orissa. Apart from this, the company will also implement number of captive power projects including 525 mw in collaboration with its group company in the Netherland. The Tata Power is also planning to commission 1,600 mw capacity of its 4,000 mw Mundra project in Gujarat during the current plan period.
